Easter Island Accommodations

Chez Jerome is on Avenida Policarpo Toro a kilometer south of town. Breakfast and airport transfers are included. French is spoken here.

The Oceania Rapa Nui Hotel, on Tu'u Koihu a few minutes walk from the airport, has six attractive, spacious rooms in a quadrangle facing the large dining/sitting area. It's a tad expensive in the high season, but good value during the low season.

The Hotel Hotu Matua is at the east end of Ave. Pont not far from the airport. Some of the 53 rooms are rather old with worn carpets, so ask to see yours before accepting. There's a 10 percent surcharge if you pay by traveler's check or credit card. This motel-style complex angles around a half-moon freshwater swimming pool, and there's a bar. The owner's minimuseum off the lobby contains several intriguing artifacts. The LanChile flight crews always stay here.

The seven-room Hotel Victoria, off Ave. Pont, provides s common kitchen for guests. This comfortable hotel has a breezy hilltop location.

One of the nicer medium-priced places is Hotel Gomero, on Tu'u Koihu, with 17 rooms in long blocks. Only the four superior rooms have air conditioning and a private terrace. This tasteful, quiet hotel has a swimming pool, and Manu Iti Tours is based here.

Hotel O'tai is on Te Pito o Te Henua across from the post office. There are 32 rooms, a nice garden, and a swimming pool. The new wing has nice rooms oriented so one catches the breeze. Unfortunately the O'tai is just around the corner from the island's other disco, the Toroko, so avoid staying here on a weekend.

At the corner of Te Pito o Te Henua and Atamu Tekena, Hotel Manavai has 26 rooms in a long block of rooms facing the garden and pool. The open air dining room is lovely.

Residencial Chez María Goretti, on Atamu Tekena north of Cabañas Vai Moana, has 15 large rooms. It's friendly, and there's a lovely garden and lounge. French is spoken.

Cabañas Pikera Uri near the museum has some nicely appointed bungalows and would be a good choice if you are into horseback riding. Five different rides around the island are possible.
